Parties Draft Recommendations for National Election Commission
July 19, 2004
With Liberia’s October 2005 elections fast approaching, the country’s National Election Commission (NEC) began a consultative review of Liberia’s electoral framework in early June. The consultation process gave the political parties three weeks to submit any recommendations to the NEC. One week before the deadline, many of the parties had not even begun to draft recommendations. To ensure that parties did not miss the opportunity to provide their critical feedback to the NEC, IRI gathered representatives of the political parties at the IRI’s Resource Center to begin the drafting process. Representatives from 15 of the 18 parties attended the meeting. With IRI’s help and the assistance of a United Nations Electoral Expert, 17 parties signed a document of joint recommendations and submitted them to the NEC on time.
