IRI Hosts National Seminar to Promote Women’s Participation in Political Parties
June 21, 2006
On June 20-21, 2006, the International Republican Institute (IRI) organized a national seminar to encourage political parties to adopt policies that will ensure the participation of women in politics and equality for women leaders and candidates during the 2007 elections.
The two-day seminar brought together more than 100 political party leaders from 35 national political parties, civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders to exchange experiences and deliberate on critical issues relating to equality for women within political parties. Seminar topics included advocacy strategies, the role of civil society in enhancing women’s political participation and electoral representation, and the role of the media in enhancing women’s political participation.
At the end of the seminar, participants agreed to incorporate affirmative action policies, and promote women’s equality and participation within political parties.
