IRI Receives Recognition for Women's Programs
June 23, 2004
June 2 –IRI’s post-election efforts to enhance women’s political participation received recognition from the National Women Mobilization Committee (NAWOMCO) during their “Women Empowerment Merit Awards” ceremony. IRI received an award from NAWOMCO in recognition of IRI’s “commitment to expanding women’s political space” and for its role in promoting women’s participation in politics. IRI’s programs in Nigeria have included a conflict roundtable addressing the role of women in politics and a women’s forum, assembled women politicians and civil society representatives to identify effective mechanisms for facilitating women’s electoral representation and political participation.
IRI Nigeria Country Director Matthias Naab and Project Officer Wahirat Aliyu received the award on behalf of IRI. The NAWOMCO in event in Abuja acknowledged and presented awards to men, women, and organizations that have contributed to women’s empowerment in Nigeria.
