Regional Workshop Energizes Party Activists
July 8, 2004
June 7-10 – IRI conducted a four-day training workshop in Kampala for 22 leaders of youth-focused NGOs from four countries – Kenya, Somaliland, Sudan and Uganda. The topic of the seminar was “NGO Organizational Management and Leadership.” Featured speakers included prominent figures in the Kenyan NGO community, such as Danny Irungu, founder and executive director of Youth Agenda (YAA), Kenya’s most successful and effective youth-based NGO; Martin Kajwang, a lecturer at the Kenya Institute of Management; and James Allego, a lecturer at Daystar University and the Kenya Institute of Management.
The training includes sessions on NGO structure and organization, resource development, proposal and budget writing, conflict resolution, and development of workplans. Interspersed with lectures were hands-on activities and opportunities for participants to put what they were learning into practice.
While the agenda for the workshop was very broad, the participants showed great enthusiasm for the training topics. Strong bonds were formed among the participants, who were grateful for the opportunity to meet their counterparts from three other countries.
