IRI Continues to Support Burma's Democratic Opposition
March 30, 2003
IRI continued to support Burma’s democratic opposition this month by conducting a two-day seminar on economic governance in transitioning societies for the Democratic Party for a New Society and other Burmese political border organizations.
The trainer, an economist with George Mason University, spent the first day teaching basic economic analysis including the long-term consequences of government policies such as price controls, quotas, taxes and subsidies. The importance of rule of law, institutions and infrastructure was also addressed.
On the second day, the training converged on the effects of socialized education, healthcare, minimum wages, and the advantages and disadvantages of working with the IMF and World Bank.
This seminar is part of an on-going training effort for Burma’s democratic opposition.
