IRI Indonesian Director Speaks on Upcoming Elections
August 29, 2003
August 8 - Indonesia Country Director Thomas Garrett spoke at a State Department workshop on Indonesia's upcoming elections in Washington, D.C. Garrett explained the logistical challenges of implementing three nationwide elections in one year, the current political environment, and the mechanisms created by legislators to stymie potential abuse and election fraud.
Indonesia’s leaders continue to implement major constitutional reforms, including the first ever direct election of a president and vice president. The national election commission has set provisional dates -- July 3 and September 13 -- for the two rounds of presidential elections in 2004. Local, provincial, and national legislative elections will take place on April 5.
IRI has supported Indonesia’s transition from authoritarianism to democracy since 1998. In the time leading up to these elections, IRI will work to develop political parties and improve electorate outreach in target provinces. The Institute will also increase its emphasis on women’s political development and campaign-focused party programs.
