IRI Trains Indonesian Candidates and Political Parties
February 27, 2004
The entire month of February has been one of considerable election-related training activity for IRI-Indonesia. Eight U.S.-based trainers traveled to each of IRI’s program provinces and, in tandem with local IRI staff, conducted training for candidates with a focus on campaign strategy, message development, and voter outreach. To provide training for all 24 parties on the April legislative ballot, IRI conducted panel discussions in its program cities. The sessions addressed a general overview of election codes of conduct and elements of democratic campaigning. Many IRI training programs are taking place outside provincial capitals and are part of ongoing training for Indonesia’s major political parties. All candidate trainings will culminate in early March when the political campaigning season commences.
