Mongolians Parliament Leader Speaks at IRI

November 21, 2003

November 10-12 -- His Excellency Tumur Ochir of Mongolia was in Washington to discuss the current economic and political situation in his country. Mr. Tumur Ochir is the Chairman of the State Great Hural (SGH), the second-ranking member of the Parliament of Mongolia.

During his stay in Washington, Mr. Tumur Ochir met with Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), Representative Henry Hyde (R-IL), Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly, and Deputy National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley.

November 12 -- IRI President George Folsom presided over a luncheon in which Mr. Tumur Ochir discussed new electoral and ethics legislation that is being considered in the SGH, as well as the economic situation in the country. He also thanked IRI for its ongoing efforts in Mongolia. The luncheon was attended by over 30 participants, including representatives from USAID, World Bank, and the USA-Mongolia Business Council. Ambassador R. Bold and Members of Parliament Mr. Sh. Gungaadorj, Mr. Ts. Uuld, and Mr, N. Togtoh of Mongolia also participated in the lunch.
