Civil Society Initiatives

Through civil society, people find solutions to community problems, demand changes in government policies, raise public awareness and increase citizen participation – all critical components of a thriving democracy.

In Tunisia and Egypt, IRI works with traditionally marginalized youth populations as they engage in political processes through civil society.  Through the Youth Leadership Academy in Egypt and Youth in Politics program in Tunisia, IRI helps young activists implement community projects, develop advocacy skills and conduct government watchdog activities.  These efforts increase democratic participation, transparency and political awareness among future leaders.

IRI also works with civil society groups to increase participation in the electoral process through get-out-the-vote and voter education campaigns.  Through these efforts, IRI increases voters’ understanding of their rights and strengthens citizen interest in democratic processes.
