IRI Hosts Seminars for Women Political Leaders
March 12, 2004
February 29-March 3 – IRI conducted three interactive training seminars for politically active women in Chisinau, Moldova. The seminars attracted 178 women from three major political parties and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), extending to all regions of the country and including many elected officials (13 mayors and 16 municipal and local council members). Women from the Social Liberal Party, the Christian Democratic People’s Party and the Our Moldova Alliance Party attended the training sessions on separate days.
Regional trainers addressed the seminar topics that included recruitment of female candidates for public office, campaign training, message development, effective voter targeting, issue identification, and cooperation between women representatives of political parties and women’s NGOs. Dr. Oleg Serebrian, leader of the Social Liberal Party, and Dmitri Braghis, leader of Our Moldova party, provided opening remarks to their party organization’s respective seminars. Seminar attendees completed evaluation forms to provide feedback to IRI/Moldova for use in future political training sessions.
The seminars are consistent with IRI/Moldova’s mandate, which emphasizes training of and interaction with politically active women in the country’s political parties and NGOs.
