IRI Co-Hosts Election Law Training
July 19, 2004
June 16, 2004 – IRI co-sponsored with the American Bar Association’s Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI) a training seminar on Moldovan election law in Chisinau. Forty participants attended the seminar, including representatives from all of Moldova’s major political parties, members of various legal organizations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and representatives of the Central Election Commission.
Mihail Petrache, a member of parliament from the Centrist Coalition and an authority on election law, and Paul Strutcezcu, president of the League for the Defense of Human Rights in Moldova, gave presentations. Igor Botan, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy led a round table discussion on the way elections in Moldova are regulated and administered. The overall purpose of the seminar was to educate members of political parties and politically-active NGOs about the development, status and actual implementation of election law in Moldova. IRI plans to hold more election seminars of this kind in preparation for the February 2005 parliamentary elections.
