IRI Trains Women Parliamentary Candidates
May 14, 2006
In March 2006, Macedonia’s Parliament passed a new electoral code that requires that one out of every three individuals on parties’ candidate lists is a woman. In response, the International Republican Institute and the Macedonia Women’s Lobby – Gender Task Force organized a media training seminar to help women candidates develop techniques for engaging the media and conducting on-camera interviews during the official 20-day campaign period.
IRI and the Macedonia Women’s Lobby sponsored a multi-party media training seminar for first-time women parliamentary candidates in preparation for Macedonia’s July 5 parliamentary elections. The seminar, held May 12-14, featured IRI’s Egypt Country Director and former CNN reporter Gina London, who provided intensive on camera training and instruction to women candidates on methods to maximize earned media opportunities on the campaign trail. The seminar included a mock press conference.
