Serbian Administration Launches 1,000 Young Serbian Leaders Program

June 19, 2006

The People's Office of Serbian President Boris Tadic launched its 1,000 Young Serbian Leaders program with a media event on June 19, 2006. The program, sponsored by the People’s Office of the Serbian Presidency in cooperation with the Zoran Djindjic Foundation, stems from a vision of the late Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic to develop youth leadership capabilities through training and educational seminars. All major Serbian media outlets attended the event, which presented the program to the public and encouraged youth to apply for participation in the program. The International Republican Institute (IRI) has worked closely with the People's Office since its creation in 2004, and worked with People's Office staff on the 1,000 Young Serbian Leaders kickoff event.

The 1,000 Young Serbian Leaders program is designed to develop leadership among young people, ages 21-35. Participants will take part in educational seminars on strategic planning, write project proposals, and learn the basics of leadership. They will also be given the opportunity to work with government institutions and/or private companies to work on specific agriculture, industry, science, culture, local government, and media projects. Participants will then have the opportunity to do an internship with organizations and companies, both in Serbia and abroad. Through the contribution and development of these young leaders, the program hopes to strengthen Serbia’s democratic leadership for decades to come.
