Former President of Uruguay Speaks at IRI Urges Democracy in Cuba
April 7, 2005
April 7 – IRI hosted former president of Uruguay (1990-1995), Luis Alberto Lacalle, to highlight his efforts to help bring democracy to Cuba. Lacalle has been a leading defender of human rights throughout Latin America and a powerful advocate for democracy in Cuba. During his introductory remarks, Lacalle recalled how he had been jailed, harassed and threatened while he was a dissident during Uruguay’s military dictatorship. During his visit to IRI he credited the international community for providing moral support to the pro-democracy movement inside Cuba and praised efforts to internationalize the pro-democracy movement in Cuba.
Former President Lacalle is a founding member of the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba (ICDC). He played a key role at the ICDC Prague Summit held in September 2004 in the Czech Republic to form a worldwide movement for democracy in Cuba.
