Middle East and North Africa The past year was widely predicted to be one of reversals for democracy in the Middle East and North Africa. While there were serious challenges for local democratic activists in places like Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Iran, the year also demonstrated the continued commitment of regional reformers in Oman, Jordan, Morocco, Kuwait and Lebanon to democratic change.
