Statement by Lorne Craner President of the International Republican Institute Regarding the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto

The International Republican Institute (IRI) was deeply saddened at the tragic death of Benazir Bhutto and many of her supporters today. "Benazir Bhutto was part of Pakistan’s future and her death is a great loss to Pakistan," said IRI President Lorne Craner. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Ms. Bhutto and those who were killed and for the recovery of those injured."

"Through its work with political parties both in government and in opposition, IRI knows the desire among Pakistanis for democracy is strong and, in the spirit of Benazir Bhutto’s commitment to her country, affirms its commitment to the promotion of democracy in Pakistan," Craner said.
