January 28, 2011

The results of this poll were not released by IRI.  However, IRI is making available the methodology and the demographics to demonstrate that the poll complies with the professional standards in the industry.

The poll fieldwork, oversight and analysis were conducted and provided by the Consulta Mercados S.A, polling firm based in Guatemala City.

The population under study was men and women 18 years and older from all departments in Guatemala.

The poll was conducted using multistage randomized sample, geographically distributed by department and by urban and rural areas according to the Guatemalan National Institute of Statistics (INE).  A total of 190 municipalities were randomly selected for this sample, within which city blocks were randomly selected for interview.  Visits to each home interviewed were conducted by starting at the northwest corner of the block and following a clockwise pattern around each city block, skipping every three to five homes.

Respondents were selected based on age (18 years old or older), being a resident in the home polled for at least one year, not working for the government (national or local) and not working for the media.  The last birthday method was used when more than one person in a household met the criteria.

A total of 1,620 face-to-face interviews were conducted from September 1- 15, 2010.

The margin of error is +/- 2.4 points at 95 percent confidence level.
