October 11, 2011

The results of this poll were not released by IRI.  However, the Institute is making available the methodology and the demographics to demonstrate that the poll complies with professional standards in the industry.

Poll work was conducted by Elka Consulting based in Tunis, Tunisia.  Oversight and analysis was provided by David Williams of Williams Consulting Inc.

The population under study is representative of the adult population of Tunisia (see demographics below).

Stratification was based on three stages: a proportional division among Tunisia’s 24 governorates, proportional division of urban and rural categories and proportional division by gender and age group according to the most up-to-date data from Tunisia’s National Statistics Institute collected in July 2009.  The sample was then post-weighted to make it proportionate to national representation by province.

The Kish method was used to select respondents 18 years and older within the randomly selected household.  Only one house was selected per street (the second), with interviewers selecting every third parallel in localities selected through area probability sample.

Face-to-face interviews were conducted.  The interview teams were comprised of both of males and females.  All supervisors and interviewers were native to the provinces in which they worked.

Sample size: 1,253

Eligibility criteria: age 18 and older

The margin of error is +/- 2.78 percent overall.

The response rate was slightly more than 90 percent.

The nationwide poll included all provinces of Tunisia.

The field work was conducted September 2 – 14, 2011.
