Washington, DC – Today IRI released its first survey of public opinion in Egypt (PDF) (Arabic version (PDF)) along with analysis of the poll’s findings (PDF) (Arabic version (PDF)).  This poll marks one of the first major releases of public opinion research in Egypt since the departure of Hosni Mubarak, under whose rule survey research was forbidden.

Given that understanding and responding to public sentiment is a crucial element of democratic governance, this and future polls will serve as an aid to Egyptian civil society and government officials, while increasing international understanding of Egypt during this time of change.

This survey, conducted from April 14-27, 2011, was based on 1,200 interviews, yielding an overall margin of error of ± 2.78 percent at the midrange of the 95 percent confidence level.
