IRI Launches Women's Democracy Network

President and First Lady Meet with Women Leaders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 8, 2006

Washington, D.C. --The International Republican Institute (IRI) this week launched the Women's Democracy Network with a conference of accomplished women leaders from Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, as well as the United States. The three-day conference was held March 6-8, 2006, and brought together members of parliament, local activists, academics, and business leaders to foster relationships and help these leaders advance as their countries make the transition to democracy.

During the three-day conference, which coincided with International Women's Day, participants visited the White House on Tuesday, March 7, where they met with President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. During his remarks, President Bush honored the women for their work to strengthen democracy. "We're also seeing women take their rightful place in societies that were once closed and oppressive…There's no doubt in my mind, empowering women in new democracies will make those democracies better countries and help lay the foundation of peace for generations to come." President Bush also recognized the work of the Women's Democracy Network, "This conference provides an opportunity for women leaders around the world to connect with each other and serve as mentors for women in developing democracies so they can help shape the future of their nations."

The women also participated in regional workshops designed to identify challenges facing their governments and societies and determine ways in which the Women's Democracy Network can assist in addressing them. Keynote speakers for the conference included Paula J. Dobriansky, Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs; The Honorable Ana Palacio, former Minister of Foreign Affairs for Spain; and The Right Honorable Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada.

The Women's Democracy Network is an initiative established by the International Republican Institute to foster relationships among women leaders from around the world, providing them with opportunities to share experiences and develop the skills needed for professional advancement. The Women's Democracy Network will encourage and support women working to advance political, civic and economic participation in their countries, and create regional networks to strengthen their development.
