As part of IRI’s program, Creating Economic Growth to Fight Poverty and Strengthen Democracy in Bolivia, IRI invited Cronick to share her experience with small entrepreneurs from marginalized areas in Bolivia who have an interest in expanding their businesses and accessing U.S. markets.

Women’s Democracy Network Celebrates First Anniversary, March 2007

IRI Trains Europe’s Future Leaders
Participants from Poland, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania prepare a voter targeting presentation. They were a few of the young leaders who have participated in IRI’s Leadership Institute for Central and Eastern Europe (LICEE). This training was in Bucharest, Romania in December 2006. During a IRI-hosted trip to Washington, DC, leaders of the Belarusian Democratic Opposition met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss the current political situation in Belarus. In addition to meeting with Secretary Rice, the delegation met with President George W. Bush, members of congress and administration official to discuss the increasing deterioration of human rights and their preparations for the 2008 parliamentary elections.

November 2007
Representatives of civil society and the Mayor’s office from Potosi, Bolivia discuss how to provide better employment opportunities and improve education for their citizens on local radio show Transperencia. The radio programs, supported by IRI, inform citizens about activities of the Mayor’s office and help create a more transparent local government.

October 2007
Students and teachers participate in a tolerance workshop, writing down suggestions for how local authorities and mining company representatives could help citizens of the small town of Villa Chuquiña in Bolivia. IRI hosted the workshop as part of a series emphasizing good governance in communities that are resource-rich but remain disenfranchised.

Each group of young women from Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) party had fifteen minutes to help one another across a rope held several feet above the ground. This represents one of the activities that stressed the importance of teamwork at the IRI youth leadership seminar held in the city of San Luis Potosi.

Women parliamentarians launched the Liberian Women’s Legislative Caucus in July at an event attended by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (third from right). Through the caucus women members of parliament, regardless of party, will work together to address issues of particular interest to women.

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan addresses the National Association of Maliks, an organization of tribal elders, during a conference hosted by IRI. President Karzai’s speech focused on the need for Afghans to become self-sufficient and cited education as the key to Afghanistan’s future.

Loretta Rosales (fourth from bottom right), a parliamentarian from the Philippines, leads a training session on leadership skills for women in government at IRI’s “Women Defining Politics” conference in Sri Lanka. The two-day conference brought together participants from throughout Sri Lanka to discuss how to increase women’s participation in politics.

A delegation representing 10 Iraqi political parties traveled to Cambodia to serve as election monitors for the country’s April 1 local commune council elections. The delegates toured Cambodia’s infamous killing fields. The Iraqis were part of the Committee for Free and Fair Elections in Cambodia’s election monitoring effort.

A disabled Albanian woman casts her ballot in the countries February 18 local elections. IRI launched a project to engage Albanians with disabilities in the political and electoral life of the country. IRI’s partners monitored the elections to evaluate access for the disabled at polling stations
