Inauguration Day: IRI Congratulates President Trump, Commends President Obama for his Service

Washington, D.C.—The International Republican Institute (IRI) issued the following statement on the occasion of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th President of the United States.

“Today, the world will observe one of the fundamental tenants of a free society: the peaceful transition of power. In his farewell speech last week, President Obama rightly described this as the ‘hallmark of our democracy.’

“IRI congratulates President Trump on his inauguration, and wishes him every success in his new role. The Institute also thanks President Obama for his eight years of service, and for his commitment to reinforcing the principles of democracy at home and abroad.

“Reflecting on his time in office, President Obama reminded us that ‘America is no fragile thing. But the gains of our long journey to freedom are not assured.’ This holds true not just for our own system, but for the many countries around the world struggling to build the institutions of self-government. We look forward to working with the new administration to continue to support our partners worldwide as they strengthen their own democracies and advance the cause of freedom.”
