IRI Expresses Condolences at the Death of Iraqis and UN Staff

Washington, DC – IRI offers its condolences to the families and friends of the Iraqi men and women slain on Tuesday March 29, in an al Qaida-affiliated gun attack on the provincial council building in Tikrit, Iraq.  Among the 58 dead were two provincial council members who had worked with IRI in 2009 and 2010, Abdullah Jebara and Sheikh Mahdi al Arran.  Both men worked for national reconciliation and, as democratically-elected officials, served their communities.

IRI also wishes to offer condolences to the families and friends of the United Nations’ staff members murdered in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan on April 1.  Through its work in northern Afghanistan, IRI had met with some of the United Nations workers in the past and wishes to honor their dedication and commitment to Afghan democracy and development.
