IRI Statement on the Anniversary of Burma’s August 8, 1988 Uprising

Washington, DC – “Today the people of Burma commemorate the anniversary of the August 8, 1988 pro-democracy uprising by students against the regime of Ne Win. On this date 28 years ago, troops opened fire on mass student demonstrations in Rangoon, leading to the deaths of approximately 3,000 people.

“For more than two decades IRI has supported Burma’s pro-democracy movements, most recently working to strengthen the institutional capacity of political parties and civil society organizations. As the people of Burma remember the fallen heroes of the 1988 student uprising, IRI renews its commitment to support those who continue the struggle for democracy in Burma.”

Below is a first-hand account of the uprising by IRI staffer Aung Saw Oo.
