U.S. Senator John McCain

Senator McCain first joined IRI’s Board of Directors in 1992 and was named its Chairman in 1993.  After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, McCain served as a Navy pilot for more than 20 years, including combat duty during the Vietnam War.  McCain retired from the Navy in 1981, and in won election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona’s first congressional district in 1982.  After serving three terms in the House, McCain was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, succeeding Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater.  In the 2008 election, McCain was the Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States.  As a senior member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, McCain is heavily engaged in U.S. foreign policy and defense issues.
