On Thursday, the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

While the campaign for this referendum often proved divisive, the result was clear and reached in an open and democratic manner. Whatever our personal views on the outcome, we can all agree that economic and political uncertainty serves no one’s interest, least of all that of the United States.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said “Honestly [the process] shouldn’t be indefinite — but I’m not going to push for an immediate withdrawal. We must along with the 27 member states decide how to react to British proposals for this separation.” We at IRI agree and believe it is important that cool heads prevail. In times of crisis, our peoples need and deserve responsible leadership. IRI is confident that its close friends and allies in Europe will provide just this.
