Washington, DC – IRI is tremendously saddened to hear of Laura Pollan’s passing in Havana, Cuba yesterday.  For nearly a decade Laura led the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White) in their courageous fight to peacefully call attention to the human rights abuses of the Castro Regime, as well as the unjust totalitarian conditions under which Cubans live.

Her group and their Sunday marches have come to symbolize the power of civil society and peaceful resistance in her country.  Her dream was a free Cuba.  Someday when the walls of the Castro Regime are torn down, Cubans and the rest of the world will recognize Laura Pollan as one of the heroes responsible for that moment.
