Transatlantic Strategy
Today, perhaps more than ever before, Transatlantic solidarity remains crucial to defending the tenets of democratic governance and safeguarding the rule of law and fundamental human freedoms.

For more than seven decades, the Transatlantic relationship has anchored the global advancement of democracy, the promotion of representative governance, and the endeavor of assuring peace and security not only in Europe, but around the world. Today, perhaps more than ever before, Transatlantic solidarity remains crucial to defending the tenets of democratic governance and safeguarding the rule of law and fundamental human freedoms. In light of its historical successes and contributions in establishing a more stable international community, IRI recognizes that the continued success of the European-American relationship requires constant nurturing and tending in the face of external and internal challenges.
Unlike a generation ago, both highly developed and transitional democracies across Europe now confront constant threats from forces that aim to undo decades of peace and stability, as well as undermine social and economic progress. To counter these forces and reinforce European democracies, IRI’s Transatlantic Strategy Division works with a broad range of stakeholders in the political sphere, including parties, civil society organizations, and think tanks, as well as European Union political party groups. In doing so, IRI succeeds not only in fortifying democracies at an institutional level, but also in ensuring that the needs of European citizens continue to drive representational democracy.
Through its Beacon Project, IRI counters disinformation and misinformation spread by external actors to sow distrust in European democratic institutions, primarily emanating from the Kremlin. Similarly, IRI works with political party partners across Europe to counter the aggressive stance of the Chinese Communist Party, which aims to build influence in the region and subvert democratic practices and the Transatlantic relationship.
IRI’s programs also bolster Europe from within by cultivating the next generation of political leaders through its European Democratic Youth Network (EDYN), fostering a network of highly capable individuals who believe in advancing democratic governance. In addition, through its extensive work with political parties and European Union-level party groups, IRI executes a wide range of programs that seek to better understand the needs of citizens, address and dilute political extremism, and guarantee that parties remain successful, effective advocates for the needs and demands of citizens.
In a world of increasing uncertainty, polarization, and tension, IRI’s Transatlantic Strategy Division is fully committed to advancing democratic values. Stability, peace, and fundamental freedoms are far from guaranteed, but through its partnerships and work with European partners, IRI strives to ensure democratic governance for future generations in a Europe whole, free, and at peace.
