Washington, DC – IRI today issued the following statement regarding the importance of elections in Nigeria, which are now scheduled to take place on March 28 (presidential and legislative) and April 11 (gubernatorial and state assemblies).  IRI will field an international election observation mission for the March 28 elections.

“A country guided by strong democratic institutions, such as issue-based political parties, a transparent electoral commission, vocal civil society organizations and independent media, is one of the best antidotes to security threats.  During these crucial times in Nigeria, it is paramount that the country continue on its path of democratic development, including through peaceful, timely electoral processes.

“It is critical that the upcoming electoral process in Nigeria proceed, and that it include an open dialogue among all stakeholders.  A stable, democratic Nigeria is best for Nigerians, and will be the most potent deterrent to those who would wish to undermine the principles of individual freedom and peace that the vast majority of Nigerians want to see for their country.  Given Nigeria’s strategic position and its vast economic potential, a stable, democratic Nigeria is also best for the whole of Africa and the international community.

“IRI commends the signatories of the Abuja Accord, and calls on all political parties and civil society organizations to reinforce the message of peace and non-violence in the lead up to these critical elections.”
