Since 1995, the International Republican Institute’s Freedom Award Celebration has honored individuals whose commitment to the advancement of democracy, freedom, and human liberty has created opportunity for millions of people around the world. As IRI’s highest honor, the Freedom Award exemplifies the goals and accomplishments of strengthening democracy for a safer, more secure world.

Over the years, honorees have included luminaries such as President Ronald Reagan; President George H.W. Bush; President George W. Bush; Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Laureate and Burmese democracy leader; Natan Sharansky, former political prisoner and human rights activist; and former secretaries of state Henry A. Kissinger, George P. Shultz, and James A. Baker.

Posthumous awards have also been given to Pope John Paul II; The Honorable Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger.

In 2021, IRI was honored to present the Freedom Award to the people of Lithuania, Burma, Belarus, and Cuba.
