IRI Condemns the Sentencing of Democracy Activists in Hong Kong

Washington, DC – The International Republican Institute (IRI) released the following statement after 45 democracy activists, including Joshua Wong, were given prison sentences of up to 10 years for taking part in an unofficial primary election:

“The International Republican Institute strongly condemns the unjust sentencing of 45 democracy activists in Hong Kong. The Chinese Communist Party forced the National Security Law on Hong Kong to silence its critics and crush any opposition to Beijing’s totalitarian rule. These harsh sentences show that the CCP is afraid of any voice that can challenge its authority or advocate for democratic governance. IRI calls for their immediate release.”
