IRI expresses its deep condolences to the people of Nigeria for the loss of their president, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
President Yar’Adua worked tirelessly to promote peace and stability, both in Nigeria and on the African continent. He will be remembered for his strong commitment to improving the lives of the more than 150 million Nigerians, starting to bring peace to the Niger Delta and beginning to reform the electoral system. In 2007 Yar’Adua initiated a process to reform Nigeria’s electoral system. Key amendments to Nigeria’s electoral framework are currently being finalized by Nigeria’s National Assembly.
With less than one year remaining before scheduled national elections, IRI encourages the Federal Republic of Nigeria to honor the memory of President Yar’Adua by publicly renewing their commitment to his goal of ensuring that the 2011 elections are transparent, credible and fair.
