Almaty, Kazakhstan – IRI released its latest survey of Kazakhstan public opinion today along with its analysis. The poll, conducted October 15-30, 2009, is a comprehensive analysis of attitudes regarding the Kazakhstani economic, social and political landscape.
On January 1, 2010, Kazakhstan will assume the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The OSCE is the largest regional security organization in the world. Its mandate includes a wide range of issues including conflict prevention, arms control, good governance, democratization, fair elections and human rights. Kazakhstan’s chairmanship is significant as it will be the first ex-Soviet state to assume the position.
IRI has conducted surveys in Kazakhstan since 2004. The goal of its survey research program is twofold – gauging public opinion and using this information in conjunction with IRI’s work with Kazakhstan’s political parties.
The randomly selected sample consists of 1,527 adult men and women from 60 rural and 31 urban locations in all 14 regions of Kazakhstan plus the cities of Astana and Almaty. The study was designed and analyzed by Baltic Surveys / The Gallup Organization. The survey was fielded by the Institute for Comparative Social Research-Kazakhstan under the supervision of IRI. The margin of error for the national sample will not exceed plus or minus 2.5 percent in 19 out of 20 cases.
