The International Republican Institute (IRI) was deeply saddened to learn of the attack in Baghlan province in Afghanistan that killed six parliamentarians along with local leaders and children.

IRI President Lorne Craner commented, “Through its work with Afghanistan’s parliament, IRI had come to know the parliamentarians who were killed and the two who were injured.  Their dedication to building a better future for their country was an inspiration.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those whose were killed and for the recovery of those injured.”

The parliamentarians were members of the economic committee and were visiting a sugar factory in Baghlan during a fact-finding trip.  The members killed were Sayed Mustafa Kazimi, Abdul Matin, Nazik Mir Sarfaraz, Sibghatullah Zaki, Mr. Sahib-urrahman, and Mohammad Arif Zarif.  The two injured are Mr. Mohmmad Hashim Fawlad and Miss Shukria Essa Khil.
