IRI Poll: Iraqis Want Provincial Councils to Have More Authority
Washington, DC – IRI released its national survey of Iraqi public opinion, conducted September 1-7, 2012, along with its analysis. This most recent survey found:
- Eighty-seven percent of respondents want their provincial councils to have more authority than the federal government;
- Lack of water, electricity and security are the country’s greatest problems; and
-
Eighty percent of respondents believe the federal government and provincial governments do not work well together.
The randomly selected sample consisted of 3,000 Iraqi citizens eligible to vote and is a representation of the general Iraqi population by age, gender, ethnicity, religion and education. The margin of error for the national sample does not exceed plus or minus 1.79 percent.
IRI has conducted surveys in Iraq since 2003. This poll is part of IRI’s programming in Iraq designed to share information with relevant stakeholders to improve accountability and transparency in the political process.
