About IRI

The International Republican Institute (IRI) was created to be a key instrument of President Ronald Reagan’s policy of securing “peace through strength.” This approach held that the fastest way to win the Cold War would be to bolster the core elements responsible for America’s success: military superiority, the free market economy, and its unparalleled democratic institutions.
In his historic “Westminster Address” in 1982, President Reagan called upon freedom-loving nations to “foster the infrastructure of democracy” in countries where it was lacking, in order to reduce the scope for Soviet expansionism and increase the supply of governments friendly to American interests.
The International Republican Institute (IRI) was founded the following year, and has worked tirelessly ever since to advance democracy worldwide. We encourage democracy in places where it is absent, help democracy become more effective where it is in danger, and share best practices where democracy is flourishing.
With freedom under assault by a sophisticated network of American adversaries, IRI’s work is more important than ever before, and the wisdom of President Reagan’s approach remains clear. In the immortal words of the Westminster Address, we at IRI remain “…staunch in our conviction that freedom is not the sole prerogative of a lucky few but the inalienable and universal right of all human beings.” and have a stake in their country’s future.
IRI’s Mission
The International Republican Institute advances democracy and freedom globally. We link people with their governments, guide politicians to be responsive to citizens, and motivate people to engage in the political process.
What We Do

IRI strengthens democracy by empowering citizens, bolstering democratic governance, and making leaders more accountable to their people. For nearly 40 years, we have helped people and elected officials foster healthy democratic competition, increase transparency and accountability in government decision-making, and promote involvement in civic and political life.
