WASHINGTON D.C — Outgoing EPA chief Christie Whitman will head a team of observers monitoring the parliamentary elections in Cambodia.
Whitman, who leaves the Environmental Protection Agency on Friday, will lead a delegation of observers assembled by the International Republican Institute, a nonprofit group that seeks to promote democracy abroad.
The delegation will observe elections in Cambodia on July 27.
“Cambodia’s citizens deserve a peaceful, credible and fair election,” said Whitman in a statement released Monday by the IRI, am organization closely tied to the Republican Party but not directly affiliated with the party.
The group’s chairman is Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who led an IRI observer team to Cambodia in 1993 to observe the country’s first multiparty elections.
Whitman, formerly a governor of New Jersey, announced May 21 that she was resigning as EPA administrator, effective June 27. At the time, she said that she was leaving because she wanted to return to New Jersey and be with her husband.
“As rewarding as the past two-and-a-half years have been for me professionally, it is time to return to my home and husband in New Jersey, which I love just as you do your home state of Texas,” she wrote President Bush.
