The 25 Elections to Watch in 2024

2024 will be a landmark year for elections worldwide. A total of 99 countries are scheduled to hold electoral contests – including eight of the world’s most populous countries, comprising more than half the global population. With an estimated 1.8 billion potential voters, 2024 could see an unprecedented surge in electoral participation. In short, this will be the most decisive year for elections in history.

Not all these elections will be free or fair. In some cases, fraudulent results will be easily anticipated – such as in the case of dictatorships like Iran and Russia. In others, international observers will watch closely to see how the electoral institutions of more fragile democracies fare.

As a nonpartisan nonprofit organization committed to advancing democracy internationally, the International Republican Institute (IRI) is committed to working alongside partners around the world to strengthen electoral processes. IRI has selected the following 25 countries for our 2024 “Elections Watch List” based on factors such as competitiveness, population, electoral history, and regional and global significance.
