Washington, DC—The International Republican Institute (IRI) issued the following statement in response to news of the death of former colleague and former USAID Assistant Administrator Lloyd Pierson.

“We at IRI are saddened to learn of the passing of our former colleague and friend Lloyd Pierson.

“Lloyd played a foundational part in setting up IRI’s Africa division in the early 1990s and later as Regional Director for Africa—bringing extensive field experience, expertise and a passionate commitment to democracy to the Institute’s first programs on the continent.

“Lloyd carried that sense of vocation to leadership roles in the Peace Corps, USAID, USADF and, most recently, the United States Africa Sports and Education Foundation. It’s not an exaggeration to say that his work touched the lives of untold people for the better.

“We join our colleagues in the democracy and governance sector in mourning his loss, and offer our condolences to Lloyd’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
