A submission from IRI’s Ghana team has been selected as a finalist in the 2024 USAID photo contest – an annual competition highlighting the work of USAID and its partners advancing democracy around the world.
IRI’s photo highlights shows women from the Fulbe tribe proudly displaying their new voter cards in Wundua, Ghana on June 28, 2024. The Fulbe people have struggled with social exclusion, including disenfranchisement, and enhancing the political inclusion of women and other marginalized communities is a core priority of IRI’s work in Ghana.
In preparation for Ghana’s upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in December, IRI put together a pre-election briefing identifying the obstacles to women’s political participation, both as voters and political candidates. Despite the high turnout from women in the last election cycle, more work needs to be done to advance women’s full inclusion in the democratic process
IRI is honored to be chosen as a finalist, which enables us to bring attention to the incredible strides being made by Ghanaian women and marginalized populations like the Fulbe. We are grateful for the support of our funders at USAID, which enables us to carry out this vital work.
