IRI and NDI Deploy Joint Mission to Observe Jordanian Parliamentary Elections

Amman, Jordan – The International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) have deployed a joint delegation to observe Jordan’s September 20, 2016 parliamentary elections, IRI announced today. 

The delegation will be led by former U.S. Senator John E. Sununu and former Member of Parliament in the Netherlands and Eduardo Frei Foundation board member Coşkun Çörüz, on behalf of IRI; and former president of Kosovo Atifete Jahjahga and former Belgian Member of Parliament Zakia Khattabi, on behalf of NDI. 

The short-term delegation will round out the work of the mission’s long-term observers, who were deployed on August 1 to report on election preparations, candidate registration and the conduct of the campaign. A joint IRI-NDI assessment team also visited Jordan in early August and concluded that conditions for a democratic process exist for the September parliamentary elections.

The delegation will deploy teams to each of Jordan’s 12 governorates to monitor voting and tabulation of ballots on election day. The mission will then issue a statement based on their findings, including recommendations for improving subsequent elections. Delegates will take part in briefings in Amman with candidates, election officials and Jordanian civil society groups on the election law, the issues dominating the campaign cycle, and public attitudes towards the elections. 

NDI and IRI are committed to upholding the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observers and Code of Conduct for International Election Observers. Both organizations separately monitored Jordanian parliamentary elections in 2010 and 2013.  The September 20 elections will mark the first jointly-conducted IRI-NDI election observation mission in the country.
