IRI Condemns the Conviction and Harsh Sentencing of Cambodian Opposition Leader Kem Sokha

Washington, DC – The International Republican Institute (IRI) released the following statement after a Cambodian court convicted political opposition leader Kem Sokha and sentenced him to 27 years of house arrest:

“The International Republican Institute condemns the conviction of Kem Sokha on charges of treason. Far from being a traitor, Kem Sokha is a selfless leader who has fought tirelessly for the freedom and rights of the Cambodian people. His harsh sentencing, which includes stripping him of his civil and political rights, is meant to permanently prevent him from rallying opposition to Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruthless oppression of the Cambodian people. The international community must remain united in its condemnation of Hun Sen’s unjust actions and reject his brutal attempts to crush dissent.

“IRI stands with the people of Cambodia as they continue to bravely demonstrate their desire for a democratic future free from oppression and fear.”
