IRI Condemns the Conviction of Vladimir Kara-Murza

Washington, DC – The International Republican Institute (IRI) released the following statement after prominent pro-democracy Russian statesman Vladimir Kara-Murza’s unjust arrest and politically motivated conviction:

“IRI strongly condemns the unjust arrest and conviction of Vladimir Kara-Murza, a fierce advocate for democracy in Russia who was previously poisoned and targeted for assassination on two occasions by the Putin regime.

“This arrest and false conviction further demonstrates that Vladimir Putin is nothing more than a desperate dictator who will suppress all opposition to strike fear among the Russian people so he can cling to power. Vladimir Kara-Murza has been one of the strongest voices for democracy and human rights throughout Russia for many years.  His sham arrest only highlights the power behind his message of political accountability, democratic representation, and justice for the people of Russia, who have suffered for far too long under the Kremlin’s kleptocracy.

“IRI calls for his immediate release and the release of all other political prisoners in Russia.”
