The International Republican Institute’s (IRI) Moldovan country director, Michael Getto, met with Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin to discuss IRI’s democracy-building programs.

Getto updated President Voronin on IRI’s democracy and party building programs which focus on promoting women’s participation in the political process, political and governance training, and cooperation with the international community in Chisinau.  President Voronin discussed plans for the modernization of the Communist Party of Moldova and requested IRI’s help with parliamentary reform.  He expressed interest in IRI’s regional grassroots political party building, media relations training for political parties, and ongoing civil society development.

President Voronin thanked Getto for IRI’s efforts in Moldova and expressed his intention to work with IRI in the future.  Moldovan state-run news media covered the meeting.
