IRI Statement on Acquittal of Wrongfully Convicted Employees by Egyptian Court

Washington, DC—The International Republican Institute (IRI) issued the following statement in response to the news that the Cairo Criminal Court acquitted the 14 IRI staff wrongfully convicted in the NGO foreign funding trial of June 2013. The retrial was held following a referral from the Egyptian Court of Cassation, which also retried the cases of employees of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Freedom House, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).

“The International Republican Institute is relieved to learn that the Cairo Criminal Court has finally redressed the injustice done to our employees and our colleagues at NDI, Freedom House, KAS and ICFJ. We hope that today’s ruling is an indication that the Egyptian government is committed to allowing for a freer environment for independent civil society in Egypt.”
