IRI Statement on Murder of USAID Staff Member in Bangladesh

Washington, D.C., –In response to the killing of USAID foreign service national, Xulhaz Mannan, a political process analyst in the office of democracy and governance, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the International Republican Institute issued the following statement:

“We join our USAID family in mourning the murder of Xulhaz Mannan. His death is a senseless act of violence that should not be tolerated in Bangladesh or anywhere. Violence directed at those who speak their minds and stand up for freedom of expression has been increasing in Bangladesh.  Exercising free speech and human rights should be celebrated in Bangladesh, not silenced by fear and hate.

“We urge the Bangladeshi authorities to take immediate action to bring to justice those guilty of this horrible crime.”
