Washington D.C. – International Republican Institute (IRI) President Daniel Twining released the following statement in response to the passing of Colin Powell:
“IRI is saddened to learn about the passing of former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
“Powell dedicated his life to service and to the belief that the United States is a force for good in the world. He was a statesman, a trailblazer, and one of our country’s most distinguished public servants.
“IRI was proud to give Powell the Freedom Award in 1996 for his efforts to advance liberty and freedom abroad. We were honored by his leadership of an IRI election observation mission to monitor Nigeria’s 1999 presidential elections.
“His family is in our thoughts and prayers.”
