IRI Statement on the Death of Stephan M. Minikes

September 27, 2011
Washington, DC – “IRI was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Stephan Minikes, a member of IRI’s Board of Directors and the former United States Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

“Ambassador Minikes had a lifelong interest in Eurasia, and particularly Russian affairs, and was deeply committed to supporting human rights, democracy and economic development, especially in Eastern and Central Europe and the former Soviet Republics.  He was also much respected in the Caucasus and Central Asia for his involvement in regional security, economic and political issues.

“One of his most significant contributions to human rights and democracy was to elevate the profile of these issues in the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights – the most prominent democracy promotion and human rights organization in the former Soviet Union.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ambassador Minikes’ family and friends.”
