Washington, D.C. – The International Republican Institute (IRI) mourns the passing of former U.S. Air Force General and two-time National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft, who served on IRI’s Board of Directors from 1993 to 2016.
In his six decades of public service, Scowcroft distinguished himself as a thoughtful and visionary voice in U.S. foreign policy and a key architect of the expansion of democratic freedoms across the globe in the second half of the 20th century. As National Security Advisor to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, and a trusted advisor to generations of senior foreign policy leaders, Scowcroft was a model of effective public service leadership in pursuit of our nation’s highest ideals. His dedication to establishing U.S. global leadership as a force for good in the world, both in uniform and in civilian life, will continue to be a source of inspiration in years to come.
“We have lost both an American patriot and one of the country’s most remarkable statesmen,” said IRI President Daniel Twining. “His loss will be mourned by countless individuals the world over, whose lives were made better by Scowcroft’s life-long commitment to international peace and stability, and to steady American leadership in the global advance of universal values.”
