IRI Statement on the Political Situation in the Maldives

Washington, DC—The International Republican Institute (IRI) issued the following statement on the post-election political situation in the Maldives:

“IRI continues to closely follow political developments in the Maldives after last weekend’s presidential election and urges the Election Commission of the Maldives to promptly release the official results.

“Last Sunday, the people of the Maldives made their decision clear by turning out at unprecedented levels (almost 90 percent) and overwhelmingly voting for Ibrahim Solih to be their next president. Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen has already publicly conceded and agreed to a transition of power. However, recent reports indicate that President Yameen continues to delay the peaceful transition of power. Any reluctance to accept the will of the people would represent a clear rejection of democratic principles.”

“The people of the Maldives deserve to have their vote respected and to determine their own future,” said IRI President Daniel Twining. “IRI will continue to watch developments closely, and hopes to see a peaceful, democratic transition of power in accordance with the wishes of the Maldivian people.”
